Painting nails have now become an art form. One that I haven’t quite acquired yet definitely admire.

Something 4 Me – A Healthy Snack

Something I always have on hand are these Trader Joe’s Omega Trek Mix in single serving packs. They taste great, are good for you and most of all, satisfy my hunger.

Trader Joe’s is known for their variety of nuts and dried fruits and combinations but this one is my absolute favorite. They are sold in large bags but I love the single serving pouches because then I know exactly how much I have had. They are great to toss in a purse, diaper bag or gym bag and even my little monkey loves the cranberries and roasted pepitas. While he has that, I enjoy the almonds, walnuts, pecans, and pistachios. These are salted and although I would prefer them not to be, I don’t mind so much as long as I just have one serving. Course I always get tempted for another.

On our way…wondering if the sun will come out!

Little one loves collecting rocks and shells from the sand.

Needed cheers and applause to make it down the big kid slide.

Silly Monkey!

Enjoying a cool dip in the pool.

Feeling a lot more confident in the water.

Something 4 My Skin – Face Oils

20 Monday Aug 2012

Every so often I like to ‘detox’ my face by using only chemical free products. I’d like to rid my face of all chemicals permanently but with anti-aging concerns lingering now that I am in my 30s that seems close to impossible. Two that have been my go to face oils for quite some time are Josie Maran 100% Pure Argan Oil and Rodin olio lusso.

Both leave my skin radiant, smooth and healthy but at opposite price points. Rodin olio lusso is described as a luxury oil and therefore sold at a luxury price point. Josie Maran Argan Oil is much more affordable and 100% natural and organic. It’s easy to grab a sample of this at Sephora and I suggest you do. Even if you find it does nothing for your face you can use it practically anywhere so it never goes to waste.

The amazing thing about face oils are that they work for all skin types: dry, oily, combo, acne prone, aging, etc.. And because they are naturally derived, chances are they won’t cause any issues for those with sensitive skin. I love this because it means that I can not only use this on myself but on my little one as well.

Spotted Animal

16 Thursday Aug 2012

There is a science behind mixing patterns and only recently have I wanted to learn. I firmly believed that those who wore two different prints must have gotten dressed in the dark but now I’m oddly drawn to it. But it must be done correctly otherwise you can go from looking on trend to a hot mess.

What I’m loving right now are animal prints with polka dots. Dots are sweet and girly whereas animal prints look fierce and I think it’s a great combination and a popular one at that.

I especially love the layered look of animal prints and spots. Since fall’s right around the corner, I’m definately thinking of investing in some key pieces. But for now, I’ll start small with my polka dot shirt and safari cat clutch, both from J. Crew.

Memories…Misty Greek Island Colored Memories…

15 Wednesday Aug 2012

This time 5 years ago our honeymoon in Greece was coming to an end. We had such an amazing time partying in Mykonos and relaxing in picturesque Santorini. With so many of our friends choosing to visit Greece this summer, my husband and I got to reminiscing. I thought it would be fun to pull up some photos we snapped on our honeymoon and make a light supper inspired by the islands.

Unfortunately, these are the only photos I have left of our honeymoon. Computer crashed, didn’t back up…live and learn. Devastated, I moved on to dinner.

We wanted something light and fresh. Both of us indulged in a heavy lunch. I thought, why not a greek salad on pasta.

I chopped 1/2 red onion, 1 persian cucumber, a handful of grape tomatoes and a handful of kalamata olives. I also roughly chopped a handful of parsley and half that amount of mint. You can increase, decrease or substitute as you like.

At some point, boil your pasta, however much you like. For this dish, I like to use orzo. Make sure to salt the water and when the pasta has finished cooking, drain the water and drizzle the orzo with a little bit of extra virgin olive oil to prevent it from sticking. Mix with chopped vegetables and herbs.

The dressing is very simple; all the best ones are. Squeeze half a lemon (you can add more later if you like) and sprinkle salt or garlic salt and fresh cracked pepper over the top. If you like more of a garlicky flavor, added fresh garlic. Top with crumbled feta. You can accompany this with any kind of protein you like but my husband takes it as is with a glass of white.

The key to making this dish shine is to use fresh good quality veggies and not skimp on the herbs. That’s what made the food so delicious in the Mediterranean.

Ahhh…Greece. My honeymoon pics may be gone, but our memories will live on.

SomeBling 4 Me – Homemade Jewelry Cleaner

14 Tuesday Aug 2012

I’ve been using items readily available in my kitchen to clean my jewelry ever since I ruined some of my mother’s vintage baubles cleaning them with a store bought cleaner. I figured if it works, fantastic, and if it doesn’t, at least it won’t cause the damage like so many cleaners filled with chemicals will. There’s one recipe that has been my go to for the past few years and you won’t believe how simple it is.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 mug of hot water (microwave for 1 to 2 mins)
  • 1 bowl big enough to hold your jewels
  • Aluminum foil
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1 tbsp baking soda
  • 1 tbsp dishwashing soap

All you need to do is cut a piece of foil so that it covers the inside bottom of the bowl you will be using.  Pour hot water into the bowl followed by salt, baking soda and dishwashing soap. Place jewelry inside this mixture for 10 minutes. Then remove jewels, rinse with cold water and pat dry. Ta Daa!

Before

It’s in there!

After

Now I know photography can play tricks on us and you may believe that the ‘after’ pic shines more due to lighting, angle, etc. so I highly suggest you try this super simple method and see for yourself the sparkly results.

CAUTION – I have used this method for silver, gold (both yellow and white), platinum and diamonds.  I do not know how this will react to stones so you may want to ask your jeweler first.

Something 4 My Monkey – Munchie Mug

13 Monday Aug 2012

After witnessing a wedding where both confetti and rice were thrown into the air, my little monkey has tried his best to recreate that moment wherever we are and with whatever he has. Snack time had me glued to my toddler for fear the carpet and sofa would be covered in food. I had to hold his plate/bowl while he munched and played. I tried every plastic snack trap on the market and he would still manage to make a mess when left to his own devices. Discovering the Munchie Mug changed snack time forever!

  • BPA, phthalate, PVC free and 100% made in America
  • Secure Screw-On Top with easy grip handle
  • Patented spandex opening feels soothing to little hands
  • All parts clean in the top rack of your dishwasher
  • Great for the car, on planes, at daycare and at home
  • Additional air-tight lid included for keeping snacks fresh when mug is not in use
  • Made from safe polypropylene #5 plastic and 100% recyclable food grade compliant materials .

What I love most is that no amount of shaking causes his snack to fall out (and lord knows he’s tried) and as clever as my little one is, he’s not able to pry the top open. Sure the design could be prettier but I’m not complaining; it allows my little monkey to become a little more independent and gives me a little more freedom.
